John Buchan lecture
Friday 31st October, 7.30pm, Inverness Town House
The fifth main event in our 20th anniversary celebrations.
Born the son of a presbyterian minister in 1875, John Buchan is probably most famous for his spy thriller ‘The Thirty Nine Steps’. In addition to writing well over 100 books Buchan was, amongst other things, a government administrator in South Africa at the end of the Boer War, a Member of Parliament for the Scottish Universities and His Majesty's High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (twice) before being appointed Governor-General of Canada in 1935. He died Lord Tweedsmuir in 1940. Hear about how the Christian faith influenced the life and writings of Buchan and other eminent twentieth century Scottish writers.
Speaker, Harry Reid, was features and literary editor of The Scotsman and editor of The Herald and is author of a number of books including ‘Reformation: The Dangerous Birth of the Modern World’ and ‘Outside Verdict: An Old Church in the New Scotland’.
